Home maintenance doesn’t have to be expensive, and when you put these home maintenance tips to use, it won’t be. One simple yet crucial chore you should tackle this weekend involves extending your downspouts, so they direct water away from the base of your home and not to it.

Factory downspouts end at the foundation of your home, which is actually very poor designing. The very point of your gutter system is to keep water from pooling on your roof or damaging your home’s foundation. So, unless you keep a barrel at the end of your spouts, buy extension pieces to direct water at least two to three feet away from the base of your house. This 10-minute task and a few bucks can save you thousands of dollars and months’ worth of hassle in the future.
